    Notes
    • Foster's Chapel Congregation and the Slave Question
      1840s - 1850s , Foster's Chapel Church, Blount County, Alabama
From "The Heritage of Bount County," 'When the Methodist Church [now known as Foster's Chapel] divided over the slave question, Samuel [Reneau] became a Southern Methodist, but most of his congregation were Abolitionists and wanted to remain with the old church. Pliney Wileman was the leader of this group, and was ably abetted by others. Bitterness grew, and Sam was strongly intimidated, but he held his ground largely because the church was his own property. Then in the fall of 1842 it was burned.
Anthony Foster had built a cabin, cleared land, and laid claim to the land on which the church was constructed. He contended that Sam Reneau did not have title to the property. This seems to be true, because a diligent search of Blount County records fails to reveal any legal claim. The same search failed to reveal any title vested in Foster but did show that he owned land in Section 25. When a legal survey was made by Powell in 1852, the north half of Section 23 on which the church is located, became the property of Steve Ellis (see Vol. III, page 23, Blount County Record of Deeds).
Be that as it may, a new building was constructed on land which was donated by Anthony Foster, and thereby became known as Foster's Chapel, ... with the following attendants and members ... Peter Wileman, Pliney Wileman ...' p 99.
