She could draw and sing very well. She wishes she would have been encouraged more to pursue this talents. Bernita gave her hand-me-downs and didn't buy her the books she needed for school. She was 3 years older than the other students, except for Virgil Dobbs (he'd been sick). She was good in Art. Mr. Scherck was the Science teacher. The first day of class she drew his picture and one of the students told the teacher, hoping to get her in trouble. Mr. Scherck asked her to bring the picture to the front and when he saw it he said "Virginia, I'm going to keep this for the rest of my life. To think someone would draw me instead of a clown." In the 7th grade the principle was R. Ben Brown and her math teacher was Bert Holt. Both of these men loved God and taught from the Bible. She learned so much from Mr. Holt. He'd read a story from the Bible each day. He told the class that you don't have to buy another book because all the stories you need are in the Bible. If you love mysteries, they're in the Bible, if you like love stories they're in the Bible. She remembers hearing the stories she'd seen in the movies. She was a Junior Police (those running in the hall were reported and sent to the principle's office). Her school days were "the most wonderful years of my life." 1930 Capitol Hill Junior High, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma
While in living in Virginia Grammy completed the 3rd grade at 12 years old. When she came back to Oklahoma she entered into the 5th grade at Wheeler Elementary at 15 years of age. She only attended that school for a few months before transferring to Lee Elementary where she was rapidly progressed from the 5th to 6th grade.
In 1929 she enrolled in the 6th grade Lee Elementary, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Oklahoma. She played Mary in the Christmas play. Another student, Ralph, would play the guitar while Virginia sang. Mrs. Mosier, the principle, and Mrs. Fisher, the pianist were let Virginia sing in the school assembly. The children would clap and yell out songs for her to sing. She knew the words to all these songs. The kids just loved it when she sang "Ole man River" and "Desert Song". She skipped right on through 6th grade, loving every minute.
In 1934 while at Capitol Hill Senior High, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma she dropped out of school because she didn't have money to buy the textbooks.
Virginia lived with her brother Joe, his wife, Rosabel, and their kids. While in high school she got a job sewing pockets in men's pants for $14.00 a week. Then she moved in with Rosabel's parents until she moved in with her brother Johnnie. [3] |

| Notes |
- When I was 19 months old Papa died. Iím sure I remember. I went in to where Papa was in the casket and pushed a chair up and got in with Papa. When Mama found me I was patting his face. When I told my brothers they laughed and told me it was Mama who had told me. But I still see that little girl.
