    Notes
    • Joseph Keithley sold eighty acres of land in Section 23, Fairview Township, Fulton County to a James W. Berkey before 1908.

In 1878 there was a Joseph Keithley who lived in Jackson Township, Iowa in Sec. 26 and was a farmer. His post office was Central City.
Sarah indicated in 1900 that she had 3 children and only 1 was living (but Arthur and Susanna were living in 1900) From the land purchases that Joseph made I know that he was married about 1880 to a Martha Ann, she may be the mother of several of the children. According to the 1900 Census Eva, Leo and Violet's father was born in WI and mother in OH. Arthur and Susanna father born in IL and mother in KY. In 1900 Mabel and Albert were not present.
According to his headstone he was a member of the Woodmen of the World.
A quick claim deed for his land included Martha Ann Keithley. [1]
    • According to his death certificate, which has incorrect information regarding his parents. It says his father was J.S. Keithley and his mother is actually his wife. The informant was Arthur Keithley. He died of a cerebral hemorrage.

"J.H. Keithley is found dying in store by son
Death caused by paralysis of brain
Left home to attend lodge -- discovered prostrate on floor early yesterday morning
      J. H. Keithley, president of the Retail Merchants' Association, died yesterday morning at 7 o'clock at his residence, No.401 Connor Avenue, of brain paralysis. He was found lying on the foor of his store, No. 814 West Fourth Street, by his son, Arthur, about 5 o'clock, when he came to open the store.
Although Mr. Keithley had a slight chill Sunday, he went to his home Monday evening after closing his store apparently in the best of health. After eating a hearty supper he left the house, telling his family he intended to go to a lodge meeting. When his son opened the store yesterday morning he found his father lying on the floor. Doctors were immediately summoned, but at 7 o'clock he died without regaining conscouisness.
      Lived Here Many Years
It is said that a pedestrian saw Mr. Keithley in his store between 9:30 adn 10 o'clock Monday night reading. Feeling the paralytic stroke coming, it is believed that Mr. Keithley lay down on the floor of his store where he was found yesterday morning by his son.
Mr. Keithley is survived by a widow and one son. He was 57 years old. He resided in Joplin many years. He operated a general retail grocery store at No 814 West Fourth street, only a hundred feet from his residence.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made pending the arrival of relatives from Illinois and Oklahoma.

    • I know that Joseph's first wife's name was Martha Ann.
On the marriage license it indicates Martha was Miss Martha Conn. Then on Violet's birth certificate it looks like the person filling the form out was saying that Martha's maiden name was Jester.
Marriage records for Brown, Ohio 1818-1939. There was a Martha A. Jester who married a William Conn in Brown, Ohio. Problem is the marriage date is June 25, 1836.

    • As listed on their marriage certificate. J.D. Willoughby married them.
By the April 1910 census Joe and Sarah had been married 17 years. Sarah had 3 children and only 1 was living. In 1910 Arthur was 16 and his parents birth places match Joe's and Sarah's.

    Notes
    • According to the 1900 Census Eva and Leo's parents were born in the same states. Arthur and Susanna are listed as Joseph's children but the birthplace of their parents doesn't match. The census indicates that their father was born in Illinois and their mother was born in Kentucky. Joseph's second wife Sarah was born in Missouri. In 1900 Joseph, Sarah, Eva, Leo, Arthur, Susanna and uncle W.R. were living together.
